Our Review of BedStory’s Memory Foam Mattress

Purchasing a new mattress can be a grueling experience. You can do hours of research online googling “what is the best mattress?” and comparing styles, features, prices, return policies and more and still not know which mattress to choose. Then you start asking friends, family, and even strangers what they are sleeping on and find yourself more confused than ever!

A mattress is as subjective as a bottle of perfume. What one person loves another might hate, making it a tricky item to review. If you’re looking for an affordable mattress that is both comfortable AND ships free with Amazon Prime, then keep reading!

Why We Needed A New Mattress

We loved our cheapo ($350) memory foam mattress we bought on Overstock.com in 2008. It was the first mattress my husband and I had actually purchased for ourselves. It was a little too firm for our taste so we bought a memory foam mattress topper to soften it up. Then it was perfect! We loved that mattress for years. (Made 3 babies on it!) It was great. Then in July of 2016 we were asked to review the Layla Mattress. I was very hesitant because I loved our mattress but decided to give it a try.

Let me preface by saying, moving king size mattress and finding a place to store old ones is NOT FUN.

That said, I begrudgingly took my old mattress off our bed and put the new one on. The Layla mattress was soft, cushy, and was masquerading as an incredibly comfortable mattress.

I found out I was pregnant with our 4th child right after putting the new mattress on our bed and within 6 months started having mixed feelings about the bed. I thought maybe it was the new mattress but then decided no, it was just because I was pregnant that I was having so much back pain and couldn’t sleep.

Fast forward one year and both me and my husband were now suffering from chronic lower back pain. We kept thinking maybe it was because I was pregnant, then maybe it was because I was holding the baby wrong, then maybe it was because I was sleeping in the wrong position, then maybe it was because of my age, or maybe it was the weather, or this, or that… That is until my husband could barely stand up straight anymore and was hobbling around like a 90-year-old man. Again, he blamed it on a variety of different things like his age, sitting on airplanes, his hour-long commute to work, his desk chair at work, etc, etc. Suddenly it dawned on us that maybe, just maybe, it was the mattress.

Fast forward another year of suffering and we were both visiting the chiropractor weekly. It seems like the mattress just kept getting squishier and squishier every day! Needless to say, we waited too long to finally decide that we definitely needed a new mattress.

What Makes BedStory Different

I heard about BedStory Mattresses a few months before they approached me to review their mattress. I had only heard good things about their mattresses but honestly, they weren’t on the top of my list of mattresses I was considering. Having only owned two mattresses in my married life, I’m definitely not an expert! I knew there were a few things I absolutely needed in a mattress though…

  • Must be a king size!
  • Memory Foam!
  • No motion transfer! (We cosleep, need I say more?!)
  • No toxic flame retardant chemicals!

BedStory Mattresses immediately appeared to meet our needs, so we decided to go for it! We were also impressed with the other reviews we found on their mattresses and decided to risk our backs, once again, to review a mattress.

BedStory has three mattress models with springs in them and two memory foam mattress models.

BedStory recommended their Luxury Spring Mattress to us, even though we were more interested in their gel memory foam model. They promised it was soft and supportive with convoluted foam, premium gel-infused memory foam and individually pocketed springs for pressure-relieving support.

It sounded good to us and we were pretty sure anything would be better than our quickly failing Layla mattress so we decided to go for it!

About The BedStory Luxury Spring Mattress

We purchased the BedStory 12 Inch Gel Hybrid Luxury Spring Mattress in Black on Amazon and received it within 4 days. Our valiant UPS guy brought the extremely heavy box (140 lbs!!!) to our porch and offered to bring it in the house, but I told him to just leave it on the porch unless he was willing to bring it all the way up to my bedroom! I was joking of course because obviously he can’t do that.

I waited till my husband came home from work and we pushed the box up the stairs since there was no way we could lift it. Once it was inside our bedroom, our 2-year-old son immediately wanted to stand on the box and claim it. (He’s like a cat – he loves boxes.)

Following the directions on the box, we carefully cut open the box, slid out the mattress, carefully removed the outer wrapper on the mattress and then quickly positioned the mattress on our bed frame before it started to expand. It sounded like an inflating air mattress as air leaked into the shrink wrap. Within a few minutes, the mattress was nearly full size and flat.

We left it in the plastic for a few minutes and two of our kids walked around on the mattress which appeared to help it expand and fluff up. Then we removed the outer plastic and threw away the silica gel packs that were vacuumed sealed with the mattress.

We found that our mattress had a very strong odor upon taking it out of the sealed bag. We opened our windows, put a couple of fans on it, and the smell dissipated pretty quickly. I suspect the smell is the materials the bed is made out of getting compressed and concentrated so you get hit with an odor once you open the bag. The smell also might be the bag itself which was tacky to the touch with some sort of adhesive, I assume. Either way, I could no longer detect a smell on the mattress when we put the sheets on it to sleep on the bed that first night.

I’m not great at videos, but I made a quick one to tell you a little bit more about our experience with the BedStory mattress.

What Else You Need To Know

The top of the mattress is covered in a polyester fabric cover, followed by two layers of cooling convoluted foam, a layer of gel-infused memory foam and finally a layer of individually pocketed springs to ensure a quiet sleep.

The mattress comes compressed, rolled, and vacuum-sealed in a big box. It can take 48-72 hours for the mattress to fully expand but we were able to sleep on ours within 6 hours. In rare cases, it may take longer for the mattress to fully expand like not taking it out of the box as soon as you receive it or other factors like cold weather.

BedStory offers 10-year limited warranty and lifetime after-sale service for all of their mattresses.

The Verdict

Since we were a bit skeptical about whether we would like a spring mattress, we kept our old Layla mattress leaning up against the wall on the other side of our bedroom, just in case! After a whole week on our new BedStory mattress, we are ready to throw our Layla mattress out the window.

We’ve been getting a much better night’s sleep on this BedStory mattress than we have in what feels like a very long time.

Are you ready for a great night’s sleep?
